Jennette McCurdy’s debut novel might best be described as coming of age in reverse. It follows Waldo, a teenager who’s had to grow up too fast, as she navigates high school and life in general.
In a word, this book is intense. Lots of nitty gritty details coming at the reader kind of fast. 80 chapters in 273 pages? That’s how James Patterson’s books read. But it’s also … really emotional, almost hyperrealistic. Which definitely isn’t boring.
It could also be considered a cautionary tale about relationships. Don’t put people on pedestals, they might not be able to stay there. As much as Waldo thinks she’s already seen – and has seen – there’s still more to figure out. Things that can’t easily be placated with retail therapy.
Jennette McCurdy made an impressive debut. It’ll be exciting to see what she comes up with next.
