Ronald Griffin, Jr. (known only as “Griff” throughout the movie) is an actor trying to make it in Los Angeles. Recently fired from a job, he goes home to Buffalo, New York for his friend Doug’s birthday party with an idea to remake the 1997 movie Anaconda. Once he succeeds in convincing his friends from high school (including Doug) to remake the movie, hilarity ensues.
This is a movie about making a movie. It’s four friends and their passion project, reminiscent of Michael Giacchino’s adventures making movies with his friends growing up. However, unlike a composer who found success in the entertainment industry, Murphy’s Law really applies to this one: anything that can go wrong will go wrong.
That’s what makes it funny, of course. But it’s not really more than that. It tries to be a frame story — a movie about making a movie while including other narratives — but it doesn’t quite get there. Which seems ironic in context, but maybe it’s not supposed to be too deep.
However, what the movie lacks in depth, it makes up for with humor. Laugh out loud, over the top ridiculousness provided by Jack Black, Paul Rudd, and Steve Zahn. Totally worth it. Especially with the cameos. No spoilers, though. This isn’t that kind of blog.
